Legallais was established in 1889 and has become the reference in the French market when it comes to the distribution of ironmongery. The company acts as a one-stop-shop for general building and housing finishing works (building products, consumables, tools, plumbing products, electricity products,…), with an extensive and high quality product offering for craftsman, building operators and maintenance companies. These clients are being served through multiple distribution channels, being direct sales, online channels and several own points of sale. Both product availability, as well as an automated and efficient logistics service (with next day delivery) have resulted in an excellent customer service which continuously drives customer satisfaction.

Besides a strong presence in France (through Legallais and several other French subsidiaries), the company is also active in Germany and Poland. The group employs about 1.000 people and realized a turnover of EUR 225 million in 2015.

The company’s three-dimensional business model based on multi-channel distribution, specialist multi-product offering and multi-client positioning, is tailored to the current more complex consumer market. We strongly believe in centralised logistics and the pursuit for added value for the customers. The Connected Consumers’ team know-how of omni-channel market strategies and metrics-driven sales is of significant value for the management.

Growth strategy

With Gimv’s support Legallais wants to accelerate its growth by :

  • better geographic expansion
  • the further roll-out and optimisation of its business model
  • a number of selective acquisitions of distribution companies with a specialized offering in France and possibly in neighboring countries

Eric de Montgolfier, Partner - Head Gimv France

Eric de Montgolfier joined Gimv in 2015 as Head of the French Office.

Before Gimv, Eric was for 11 years the co-founding Managing Partner and COO of Edmond de Rothschild Capital Partners, which raised and managed € 530 million dedicated to controlling investments in growth buyouts in the lower segment of the French Mid-market. Prior to founding Edmond de Rothschild Capital Partners, Eric joined Astorg, a French Private Equity firm in 1990, of which he became a founding Partner in 1998 when the firm became an independent management company.

Eric originated and invested in a variety of majority and minority transactions, alongside entrepreneurs and/or managers, mostly in the consumer (brand, retail and services), TMT and B2B sectors, targeting companies in which he accelerated growth, in France and internationally, through a combination of organic growth and buy-and-build or roll-out strategies. Eric held numerous Board seats over the years, including at French iconic companies such as Picard Surgelés, Bonpoint and Christian Liaigre.
